Fort Payne’s Alexis Chambers shot a 77 to earn the top score in the girl’s division of Saturday’s Kickoff Classic golf tournament at Twin Bridges Golf Course in Gadsden.
Fort Payne’s boys’ team finished second at the event with a score of 313.
Chambers’ 77 was three strokes ahead of the field at Twin Bridges.
Chambers shot even par on the front nine before hitting a rough spot and carding a double bogey on the 10th hole. She bounced back to par four of her last five holes and hit 14 greens in regulation for the day.
Chambers was also a top-10 finisher at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Thursday at Silver Lakes Golf Course in Glencoe. The field of 75 included several top teams in the state such as Hoover, Spain Park and Auburn.
The boys’ score of 313 on Saturday was led by freshmen Harrison Davis and Dawson Garrett.
Davis finished second in the 99-man field with a 2-under 70. Garrett’s even-par 72 earned him a fifth-place finish.
Play for the day was hampered by wind, rain and cold temperatures.
“I thought our team played extremely well, especially with the weather conditions,” Fort Payne head coach Nathan Wehunt said. “We’ve improved our score in each of the last three tournaments we have played in. Our goal is to break 300 as we continue to improve and work toward getting ready for the playoffs.”
Davis and Garrett were both named to the All-Tournament Team. Davis was two strokes shy of tying for first place.
“We have several good golfers on the team, but we are still waiting on them to shoot under 80,” Wehunt said. “When that happens, we’ll have a really good team.”
Alex Mitchell shot an 84, Dylan Evans carded an 87 and Jack Barber scored an 89 in the sloppy conditions to earned Fort Payne’s 313.
Sebastian Burt and Preston Neeley played as individuals. Burt scored a 91 and Neeley shot a 92.
The girls’ team plays in Hoover today. They will join the boys’ team Thursday to play at Cherokee County before the boys compete at the Bob Jones Invitational next Monday.
