Former Plainview Lady Bear Bailey Smart has gotten off to a hot start at the plate in her first season at the collegiate level with the Jacksonville State Lady Gamecocks.
After going 0 for 1 in her debut against Rutgers on Friday at the Mercer Invitational in Macon, Georgia, The former all-state designated hitter and last year’s Class 3A Hitter of the Year reached base for the first time on a fielder’s choice in a rematch with Rutgers on Saturday.
Smart then moved up to second on a wild pitch and came around to score her first collegiate run when teammate Jada Terry ripped a double down the left-field line.
Later in the top of the fourth, Smart came up with a runner on base and no outs. She then walloped a 1-1 pitch over the outfield wall for a 2-run blast and her first collegiate home run.
Smart had one other at-bat over the weekend set when she came in to pinch hit during Sunday’s 15-0 win against Mercer.
That opportunity came in the top of the third with one out and the bases loaded.
Smart swung at the first pitch she saw and smacked an RBI single, which kick started a 6-run inning for the Lady Gamecocks.
JSU went 3-2 in their season-opening set of games in Macon over the weekend.
The Lady Gamecocks will hit the road again this weekend to participate in the Alabama State Black & Gold Tournament, where JSU is slated to face North Alabama, Alabama A&M, Western Carolina and Purdue-Fort Wayne.
