BIRMINGHAM – Fort Payne’s indoor track and field teams had several strong finishes in a meet at the Birmingham CrossPlex Tuesday where the Wildcats faced off against nearly 1,300 competitors from 42 other schools from across the state.

The two fastest male hurdlers and the fastest female hurdlers both came from Fort Payne Tuesday.

On the boys’ side, junior Carter Pinholster won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.47 seconds. Junior classmate Matthew Shaddix earned silver in the event with a time of 8.84 seconds.

Lady Wildcat sophomore Madi Wallace earned gold the girls 60-meter hurdles by finishing in 9.53 seconds.

That trio of athletes also had top-10 times in other events Tuesday.

Pinholster placed 10th in the 60-meter dash in 7.44 seconds and Shaddix finished just ahead of him in ninth place in 7.43 seconds.

Wallace placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 15-feet, 1.5 inches and also finished eighth in the 60-meter dash in 8.38 seconds.

Wildcat sophomore Shane Freeman placed fifth in the shot put with a toss of 41-feet and one inch.

Eighth grader Arianna Johnson placed 43rd in a field of 185 in the girls 60-meter dash with a time of 8.82 seconds. She clocked a 1:10.07 in the 400-meter run and placed 26th in the long jump with a leap of 13-feet, four inches.

Freshman Madisyn Hill finished the 60-meter dash in 9.25 seconds and placed 20th in the 60-meter hurdles in 11.55 seconds.

Senior Gracie Groat led the Lady Wildcats in the 400-meter run with a 12th-place finish in 1:05.71. Maddie Jackson placed 31st in the event in 1:07.56 and Mariella Francisco Sebastian placed 75th in a field of 156 in 1:11.42.

Eighth grader Anahi Barboza led Fort Payne in the 1,600-meter run with a 16th-place finish in 5:50.30.

Sophomore Aylin Vega finished 27th in 5:57.13 and freshman Mollie Sanderson placed 32nd in 5:58.82.

Abigail Vega finished the event in 6:22.03 and Kailee Garcia finished in 6:46.91.

Fort Payne junior Donald Winchester finished the 60-meter dash 28th place in 7.64 seconds, just two-tenths of a second behind Pinholster and Shaddix.

Junior Ben Anderson led the Wildcats in the 400-meter run with a 23rd-place finish in 55.35 seconds.

Hernan Cruz finished 36th in 56.54 seconds and Ashton Gilstrap placed 76th in 1:00.16.

Juniors Giles Roberts and Gaspar Jiminez both ran the 1,600-meter run for Fort Payne. Out of 216 participants, Roberts finished 94th in 5:17.86 and Gilstrap placed 129th in 5:29.80.
