The Fort Payne Wildcat golf team finished second in their invitational tournament Monday.
There was 12 boys teams and six girls teams competing. Fort Payne will be hosting the Sectional Tournament in three weeks and most of the section teams wanted an opportunity to play at Terrapin Hills.
When it was over, three teams were within three strokes of the lead. Muscle Shoals shot a 316 to win, Fort Payne defeated Hartselle 317-318 for second and third place. Cullman was 14 strokes back in fourth place. The tournament was played in a steady rain.
“I have been thinking those three teams [Fort Payne, Hartselle, and Muscle Shoals] were the top teams in the section,” said Fort Payne coach Zane Haymon. “And today, this tournament proved my point. It was an exciting ending to a great day.”
Haymon said he was happy with the overall performance of his team, but he still wants them to work on not giving away easy shots.
“I told our team I was happy with their competitive attitude and the results of the tournament, but I’ve been telling them all year how important it is to value each shot,” Haymon said. “And today we just gave away too many shots. “For example, on the 18th hole, one player three putted an eight-foot uphill putt and another player four putted the same green. And that was by two of our best players. I don’t think there was anyone on the team who didn’t three-putt at least one green. To get past the sub-state we have got to play a lot better than we did today”.
Senior Cole Skaggs led the Wildcats with a solid 73, Sam Evans and Dawson Garrett both tallied 80’s.
“If we can get our number two and three players to score in the 70s we will be pretty hard to beat” Haymon said. “Both were close but Sam and Dawson both have the talent to consistently shoot in the 70s.”
Alex Mitchell finished with an 84 and Harrison Davis shot an 88. Seventh grader Dylan Evans, playing as an in individual fired an 81.
For Hartselle, Jake Tiffin shot an 81, Garrett Reist 75 and Blake Hartselle finished with an 80. Muscle Shoals was led by Hunter Battles 77, Grant Bishop 78, and Noah Olive 79.
The team will be on the road Thursday for a match with Cullman.
Monday, they will travel to Hampton Cove to participate in the Huntsville Invitational.
